Loud and Queer

Loud & Queer is TYPF’s intervention on queer rights and diversity.  Through this programme, we create resources, platforms and leadership abilities to address critical issues of health, sexuality, prevention of violence and discrimination and increase awareness about the lives and issues of LGBTQIA+ persons.

We aim to ensure access to resources and services towards pleasure-affirmative information on safer sex, prevention of discrimination and violence. Overall, we hope to improve the experience of education, health seeking and livelihood and work for young LGBTQ+ persons.

The absolute absence of resources that are informed by perspectives, knowledge, and intersectional lived realities of queer-trans* people makes their navigation around the largely hetero-patriarchal systems difficult. It restricts their access to resources for a healthier life and relationships. We address this by building capacities of young queer-trans* people with the necessary resources and knowledge to negotiate around such issues with key stakeholders such as family members, community members, judicial bodies, and policymakers.

Loud & Queer aspires to break the historical, systemic, and institutional working of queer-trans* negativity, heterosexism and discrimination. It invites young queer-trans* people to occupy spaces in their most authentic, unapologetic, radical, loud and queer sense of being and have their voices heard and included within the movement.

Creating Resources Safer Sex for TRAnsmasculine Persons (or SSTRAP) is envisioned as a pleasure and identity affirming accompaniment for transmasculine persons as they explore their bodies, identities and sexuality. It will provide contextually relevant information and knowledge on safer sex needs and issues of trans* masculine persons with a focus on diverse Indian contexts, experiences and languages. Creating leadership against violence and discrimination Despite the changes in law and policy around trans* identities and homosexuality, preventing violence and discrimination against LGBTQ+ persons remains a challenge. Home, education institutions, workplaces, housing systems and health care systems are challenging and often violent for those who don’t conform to gender and sexual norms. We build capacities of young queer leaders to support their communities in staying safe from violence and discrimination. With a focus on family, education, health care and workplaces, we hope to equip queer youth to access and engage with these safely. The programme takes up training to build understanding of diverse laws and legal systems that can be accessed by queer persons to challenge violence and discrimination. Participants of the training take up on ground awareness actions to expand knowledge of the law among queer persons, and supportive systems within institutions. Over time, we aim to expand this community of support and action to ensure all institutions and spaces in India are safe for diverse LGBTQ+ persons.
